I live in Colorado with two cats. Juniper is an eleven-year-old tortoiseshell I adopted from a shelter, and Otis is a big orange tabby who wakes me before the alarm every morning. Before them there was Pepper, a gray cat who stayed with me for seventeen years. For a long time I thought I understood cats. Then I started reading how people actually test what cats see and hear, and most of it surprised me.

I'm not a vet, and I don't run studies. I read them carefully and write down what they found in plain words, next to what my own cats do. This book is years of that reading, put in order, with the part a short video has no room for: how to read your own cat. You have probably lived with cats longer than I have. I wrote it for you anyway.

Questions, answered honestly

Is this a printed book you mail me?

No, and I want you to know that before you spend a dollar. It is a PDF: a file you open on your phone, your tablet or your computer the moment you pay. Nothing arrives in the mail. You can print any page you like at home, and the routines at the back are made to be printed and kept on the fridge.

Is it full of science I won't follow?

No. Where I explain how something was tested, I tell it as a little scene: a cat, a room, a sound, and what the cat did next. Any science word gets explained in the same sentence. The type is set big on purpose, and every chapter is short enough to read with one cup of coffee.

Every cat is different. Will this fit mine?

You are right, and I say so in every chapter. Each one tells you what most cats do, then how to read your own, and why some cats do the opposite. You know your cat better than any book does. This one helps you see what you have already noticed.

How can anybody know what a cat thinks? Isn't it guessing?

That is a fair question, and it is the one I asked first. So for every sign in the book I tell you how it was tested, with real cats, and where the answer is honestly split, I say that too. Where a change in your cat could be pain or illness, I tell you plainly to call your vet. I'm not a vet, and this book never takes your vet's place.
